Postdoc Position

Hydroclimate projections with CMIP6

Our group at Cornell University is looking for a Postdoctoral Associate to develop a novel set of process-oriented diagnostics that will enable evaluating and constraining regional projections of runoff and other hydroclimate variables from climate models.

The overarching motivation is to improve the societal relevance of climate model projections for water security assessments. A key focus is on runoff sensitivity and associated processes that determine its behavior and bias in coupled and uncoupled land models (this perspective paper provides an introduction to the topic).

The postdoctoral researcher will be supervised by Prof. Lehner and also work with team members at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), including Drs. Andy Wood, Dave Lawrence, Sean Swenson, and Katie Dagon. The effort will analyze and integrate observational and climate model datasets, including new sensitivity experiments with NCAR’s Community Land Model, which will be conducted in collaboration with NCAR. There will be further collaborations with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory and Dept. of Energy (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory to implement the diagnostics into existing CMIP metric packages.

The position is funded by NOAA and based at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. There will be support for conferences and travel to collaborate in-person with NCAR project partners in Boulder. The successful candidate would join an active community of postdocs and personal development opportunities at Cornell (see https://postdocs.cornell.edu/).

For any questions about the position, please contact Flavio Lehner (flavio.lehner@cornell.edu).

For full consideration, please submit a letter of application, a current curriculum vitae, a diversity statement of how, through research, teaching and/or service, the candidate can contribute to diversity, equity and inclusion in support of Cornell’s mission of “any person… any study”; and the names and contact information of three references to Academic Jobs Online at: https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/19217  (follow the link for more details about the position)

Only references for short listed candidates will be contacted.  Applications will be considered until the position is filled.
